Purchasing a Macbook Air in 2025

The Macbook Air has had a curious and graceful life among the product line-up. The original release was January 2008 and it was a curious release.

History

Released in January 2008 the original laptop was a curious but desirable laptop. The machine was introduced as a thin, light weight device for the mobile warrior. The claim to fame was just how light it was and the incident where a secretary accidentally put one in a mailing envelop and sent it, not realising it was a laptop.

That aside the laptop was indeed very light and thin. The problem was it was a slow laptop. 2GB of Ram Max and either came with a 80GB spinning hard drive or 64GB SSD. It also suffered from a few problems. They were prone to just switching off, the screen would also just go blank.

Aside from these issues, the Macbook Air had a competitor in the Macbook. Apple sold both devices and while the Macbook had better specs, the average consumer wasn't looking at more ram it was the size and weight. For several years the Macbook sold along side the Air. The position of the Air was then clearer. The Macbook was to make a few cameo appearances 5 years later, but again it just muddied the waters. The last Macbook was made in 2017.

All these things didn't deter the Air from being a success and down the years the laptop got faster and better equipped. The thinness was the winning factor.

Why buy a Macbook Air in 2025

Why buy an Air at all?

Size. It's the smallest of the laptops in the Apple range a whopping 1 inch smaller than the Macbook Pro.

Cost. The cheapest 13 Inch Air is just £999 (Though look at our buying guide).

Weight. The Air is indeed a lighter beast. 1.2kg as opposed to the 14" Macbook Pro at 1.6kg. You can feel that weight difference in the laptops and yor shoulder will be happier for it using the Air.

Battery Life. You would expect that the Air has more battery life than it's more powerful cousin the Macbook Pro. But it's the other way around. The Pro does have more battery life, but I suspect that the Air would last longer as it would be used for light duty work.

Is it worth it?

For the mobile warrior the weight alone will make a difference. The screen size is a healthy 13" (There's also a 15" option).

For £100 less than the basic default option 14" Macbook Pro, the air comes with 24GB of Ram over 16GB of the Pro. Playing around with the options on the Apple Website will net you something that you can be happy with. It's always worth comparing the Air and Pro. But do remember the Pro currently has the M4 processor while the Air has the M3 processor.

Personally from a budget perspective the Air makes sense, cheaper, smaller and lighter than the Pro. You can get all the Apple goodness and not have to spend too much.

Remember. Apple Mac's ARE more expensive to purchase upfront, but studies have shown that Mac's last longer and have a higher resell value.

You decide.
